How many of you have given into the temptation of the Elf?? My guys are little, so this is the first viable year to bring this little creature into our home. At first, I wasn’t sure what to think of the cult following of Elf on the Shelf.
I decided to order our little Elf following this month’s meeting at our preschool. Our preschool has monthly parent meetings and, at these meetings, the Director incorporates a parental education component. This month was about family traditions around the holidays. Christmas has always been huge for me, thanks to my Mom. She always made Christmas Magical. I lost my Mom a few years ago, and as I started my own family, quickly realized that I had now become the “Magic.” Thanks to Pinterest and our social world, it’s easy to think other mom’s are creating far superior Magic in their homes. Yet, when I look back on my childhood the Magic that my Mom created wouldn’t have looked perfect in a Pin or obtained 1,000 likes on Instagram, however, to me it was MAGIC! We tend to overdo now and sometimes it’s helpful to remember what made Christmas special for us growing up. Chances are when you look back, it’s actually something small that will really stand out in your memory. Mine is a little Christmas Angel Chime with candles that my Mom would light on Christmas morning. So I would wake up, rubbing my eyes, and would hear the beautiful chimes and realize IT’S CHRISTMAS MORNING!! Hearing the chimes every Christmas morning was a tradition. I still have the chimes and hope my family will come to appreciate their beauty as much as I do. So, the chimes are one small tradition I carry on, but what else will create Magic and excitement for my children during the Christmas season? After thinking through traditions I decided I would start the Elf this year. I plan to stay away from the mischievous Elf activities and focus on the Magic and selfless giving of the season. Check out my Elf on the Shelf Pinterest board for ideas, there are some great examples of the positive influence that the Elf could have, if done right in your home.
Once our little Elf arrived from Amazon he looked awfully plain to me. I decided to fancy him up with a VERY quick & easy update. A little holly sticker on his hat! I also gave him a little Merry Christmas sign to hold for his big arrival!
Do you do Elf on the Shelf in your home? Have you found it to be an enjoyable Christmas tradition?
